Ammunition Boxes

Our "Boo Box" is housed in an old ammuntion box which keep it dry etc, much better than those plastic lunch boxes some people seem to use.

There is some contoversey over the use of ammunition boxes - what do you guys think?

Edited to include a Poll.

Hi, I once heard complaints about the use of old ammo boxes. Some people say that they can rust and people can cut themselves on them. Also there's a little problem with the Army training on the moors, who knows if the box has been left by the Army by mistake and what the contents might hold, obviously these will only be in their training areas. We have to think about children opening these boxes as well.

To be honest with you, I can't see a problem with them as long as they are maintained, plus as you said they are great containers which you can place a decent size book in them.

These ammo boxes can be a little pricy from a army shop so maybe that's why people prefer to use cheaper alternatives. Plastic pil pots are great but are also dwindling in supplies in our local chemists, as most tablets are packed in cardboard boxes nowadays. If anyone know where I can get some pil pots from then please let me know, I've even tried E-Bay!

I had a friend of mine a long time ago find a box of grenades - he kept them for ages and the day he let one off the police were on him in minutes - he was let off with a caution

I used to have loads of pill pots once. That was before they were fashionable for boxes though, so I ended up ditching them.

Apparently, I do not need the pills anymore and doc says I will be able to think for myself one day. Or was it for one day? Anyway, looking forward to my next day release so I can go hunting for squirrels ... er ... letterboxes I mean.

Better run, my cup of Earl Blue is going cold, and I still have 73 Easter eggs to wrap - - - >

It is very close, I must admit I was expecting that using ammunition boxes would have been a bit more popular.

I think ammo boxes should be used - but I believe that they should be painted a different colour first so to descern them from military boxes

It really isn't hard to do a can of spray paint from a DIY shop.

Maybe they should all be flourescent orage or Yellow to make them easier to find

I think it was around 1999 when a young girl picked up a metal object on Great Mis Tor thinking it was a letterbox and it turned out to be a grenade or something. After that there was a lot of controversy about using ammo boxes. At the end of the day, the army should be more careful and pick up their rubbish. (I still find army junk scattered over the North Moor).

I used ammo boxes for years, they are perfect for letterboxes and I don't think they have ever been bettered - and they are easier to find than pill boxes!

After that incident with the girl on Mis Tor there was talk of Park Rangers and the Army removing letterboxes housed in ammo boxes (if they came across them) and taking them to the offices in Park. I think many of my boxes disappeared in this way, but I never found out how true these rumours were. Are many people still using them? If so, I might return to them again - I have recently discovered the Otterbox.. http://www.psalmgear.co.uk/Otterboxrange.htm

..which seem to be ideal...but very pricey (especially if your box gets nicked.)

Like someone else said before - if the ammo boxes are painted to remove the army decals I personally don't see a problem.

Welcome to the site Brockie, I agree with what you say about the ammo boxes, however sometimes they do get very rusty and sharp if not changed say after a couple of years. I've come across ammo boxes that have been there for over ten years and not maintained.

But yes, I do much prefer ammo boxes to.

Hi Dizzy, I agree, I have seen a few ammo boxes in a bad way but they do tend to stand the test of time. I had some that were out for a long long time and lasted very well. I guess it depends how good the paint is - the brown covering the army used seemed to very durable, which makes sense I guess. One of the few problems I had with them was actually carrying them onto the moor - could get a bit heavy in a full backpack over a long distance!

Have you come across many boxes well maintained in ammo boxes? I understand why some people are against them but I think it's fine, particularly for older boxes to be housed in this way - as many of the owners are not active in current letterbox circles, do not know the change in stance. During the early 00's I believe many older boxes disappeared because of this.

I dislike ammo tins because they are far too big to hide! In my experience, a lot of ammo-tin boxes are 'hidden' behind a pile of rubble and can be spotted a mile away.

Also, as they are big and heavy, I think they tend to cause more damage to the area where they are sited. Although I suppose metal is probably a more environmentally friendly than the plastic used in pill pots?

hi guys
new to this great site and just wanted to put in my two cents! nearly every box i come across in an ammo tin is in good condition so i think they're a good idea-if a tad easy to find! If ur after pill pots try local healthfood shops, alot of they're stock are containd in them! happy hunting!
