And I am as guilty of it as the next person.

Going out on the moor wearing brown, green, or even camoflage clothing. Colours that can certainly go against you if you get into trouble.

I have seen women wearing open toed sandles and high heels .. no men doing that as yet.

Demins and t-shirts in winter

What else have you seen?

 I saw 2 middle aged ladies walking down from the Sub (Eastern Whittabarrow) towards Huntingdon Cross, with no coats, in court shoes and with their handbags on their arms. No map, no compass or rucksack. As it was around 3pmish I asked where they were headed. They said, pointing towards the cross, back to the car park  Fortunately I was turning back so accompanied them off the moor to their car parked at Shipley Bridge

'Fringers' as I call them.

Poeple living in an area close to the Moors, casual visitors, or passers by, etc. who stop, park their car and within two yards set up home. Spend the day at that precise spot (leaving the usual tea bags, bannana or orange peels, and umpteen cig ends) sat on deck chairs listening to the car radio, bluetooth or ipod / whatever. Then go home and tell all they had a great day out on the Moor.

All right! To some this is the great thing;, there are those OAP`s; disabled; inferm; contented go nowhere`s, don`t know where to goers, etc., etc. - as I am sure someone will point out (and any body of poeple I have missed!!!)

I love the moors, in all its beauty, moods, weather and character and feel others should try to also encapture its true spirit even if only for a brief period. You can visit the same place ten times in a row and each time will be different - if only you look, listen, and allow yourself to be drawn in.

I think everybody will agree with the wandering artist, the thing that really gets me is the rubbish people leave on the moor, you think its a box and it turns out to be a crisp packet pushed in a hole.

Another incident I can remember seeing was at Pork Hill car park when a bus full of tourists turned up the guide said over the bus intercom "This is Dartmoor" and without drawing breath added "You have ten minutes before we leave!" Not even enough time for most of them to even get an ice cream.

Just joined so am slowly catching up on posts... this one amused me and reminded me of a time I was walking in the Brecons, weather was sunny initially but had turned and was now mizzle and beginning to blow steadily, I was pretty much in the middle of no-where when i came across 3 men in various trainers, shorts and tee shirts and 3 women; 1 in flip flops, one in trainers and 1 in canvas heeled platforms pushing a kiddy in a buggy! I kid you not! I asked if they were ok, to which all the men nodded and said yes fine, i wished them well and turned to walk on when one of the women called out, "just checking, we're not lost but which way to the car park?" Suffice to say I escorted them off the hills.... ah grockles! gotta love em!

Ah... the litter thing... two miles from a road one of those chemical toilet containers needless to say half full.... what baffled me was that someone had to carry it there in the first place.

Another time was when we encountered a pack of scouts somewhere south of Foxtor Mire, we showed them exactly where they were on the map and how to get off the moor towards Whiteworks, they were later rescued by DRG when they managed to get lost on their way back - I only wished the leaders were prosecuted and banned from leading expeditions ever again

I am guilty of wearing shorts - but I am aware of tic's, bug bites and skinning my knees on rock so consider myself informed.

I love to wear bright colours which is great for the moor and would NEVER be out without proper boots (I value my ankles too much)

I have seen Flip flops and crocs out in the last couple of weeks and thought people were mental it must be more common than I thought.

As for litter the most annoying thing is thinking it is a box just to find out that it is rubbish (not always a nice kind of rubbish either!!!!)

Funny this topic's come up. I was at Fox Tor yesterday evening. And on my way back (it was getting pretty dark by now) I come across a man and a boy both wearing shorts, tshirts and flip flops asking me if I had seen a young girl wandering about. They were staying at Nun's Cross farm and the girl had said she wanted to climb the hill (pointing at mount Misery) after tea. And by now they had gotten concerned as she was a city girl and not wearing "suitable" clothing. I hadn't seen her, but as they walked on I noticed they had spotted her near Childe's tomb.

Not the group, but the leaders or those in charge, and then they should be forced to do a refresher course of navigation they are afterall supposed to be responsible for where they are going.

It is something I feel strongly about after teaching outdoor pursuits to kids, incompetance is not an excuse with the lives of children

You will be pleased to hear that teh staff at Okehamton TIC discouraged two youngsters today from their plan to walk Oke to princetown in one day ( today, it IS raining) with no map or compass.

Sent them off on way marked trails to Tavistock instead.
