New Year

The Thinkers

Hello all,

I read somewhere (perhaps on the forum, but I can't find it again, sorry) that there is a tradition of meeting up for a walk at midnight on new year. Does this still happen, and is anything planned for this year? I'm not sure its a 'boxing' event as such - more of a midnight jolly with torchlit walkers making their way to a focal point. Sounds fascinating and I would be interested in knowing more if anyone can help.

Many thanks

:) Check out the Dartmoor Bounders website - every year people meet up on Fur Tor (North) for a New Years day photo. Lots of people make their way there via different routes. Its not an organised walk as such, just a very long standing tradition. There is also now another New Years Day gathering of folk who can't make that long hike north, on Fur Tor (South). Same idea, lots of people exchange one day stamps and gather around lunchtime. Fur Tor South is at approx.565 725 and can be approached from Leedon Tor or, along the railway from Ingra tor, or you can walk in along the railway from Princetown or Yellowmead.

For the Fur Tor visit on New Years Day - by all means visit the website of Dartmoor Bounder as SS says.

Do not think the trip there is anything like easy - in the best of weather it is a long haul there and back (without stopping to box on the way - round trip 4 hours) - on the worst it is hazardous to say the least. Anyone who knows Dartmoor knows it can change dramatically in a few hours - winter time suddenly.

Looking at the photos on the site show by the attire worn that the conditions can and often are bad!

But, in saying that, it is the best event of the year for a letterboxer and one I do not want to miss even though it does takes me a week to recover from the walk!!!

Blow away those Christmas aftermaths, and do not have too much NY`s eve! Come join us!

SS and WA,

Thank you for your prompt and detailed replies. Yes, I had heard that there were the two venues (of the same name). I am also guessing he people gather sometime between 1200-1400 at either/or ?

Must admit that my last trip to Fur Tor (N) - follwed by the drive back to Somerset did have me scuttling like a crab when I tried to get out of the car at home !

Thanks again for the information.

I would seriously recommend the South Fur Tor especially if you have a long drive before and after. You should find most of the PGT peeps there

Hello all,

Thanks for the replies. After a bit of further research, I managed to track down the source where I first read about this;

for anyone interested, or new to the scene.

Update from today:

Managed to get to Fur Tor North for the NYD meet - It was great! At the 'official' photo session by Ian Kirkpatrich there were 32 present!!! Some had arrived early and were more intent on boxing and missed the photo as did some late arrivals. All in all a tremendous turn out.

The melted snow and ice had turned the usual boggy areas quite sticky and there was no ground frost to harden it up. Walk time round trip barely over 5 hours - return always seems easier - more down hill!

Maybe you can make it next year

Happy New Year from TWA

Had a great morning at Fur Tor South, just a short walk to the tor. Quite a few people wending their way over from different car parks. Even the hunt put in an appearance, much to our annoyance!!!. After lunch everyone went to the Prince of Wales pub for food, drink and more stamps. I decided to go and do a short Christmas walk over near Leather tor.

Here a few people 'stamping up'. I got 26 stamps on the tor and there were more on offer and also in the pub.
