Has anyone else noticed that there are some strange messages coming through this forum, trying to sell stuff?

Specifically a user called Boehma18 :

Yep, we have been hacked again - I try to keep up with it but these morons are from abroad and log on during our night. Will set to and delete them all again. Sorry folks.

Unfortunately, this is fairly common on forums and there seems to be a lot of it going round at the moment. Why these idiots think you would be tempted to buy anything is beyond me, but there must be enough people who do to make it worthwhile.

On one forum I frequent (Runners' World) the spammer is usually roundly abused and the mickey fully taken by all, before being deleted. We occasionally get replies, which indicates that the spammers sometimes monitor the responses from the forums. For this reason it's probably best not to respond to such posts at all.

Would it be worth having a closed membership? (ie invite regular posters and have a system whereby new members apply to the moderator for membership) Spammers are unlikely to want to jump through hoops.

Your first point - I totally agree, as for the second not such a good idea, the idea of this forum is to be open and friendly, yes we do get the odd freak on here on or two do slip through the net.... hang on that's me... seriously though, a lot of these posts come through someones hacked computer and 99% of the time they probably have no idea that they are doing this, just a warning if there are any with links on them do not click the links.

The moderators on here do a fantastic job keeping a lot of the clutter out of sight - to them I say a heartfelt thank you.

If anyone has a problem with strange posts feel free to contact me by PM making sure you copy across the name and the text and then I can deal with them accordingly and that also applies to any abuse

Some of you might have noticed that filters on here change words to something silly, this is a family orientated forum and we aim to please as many people as we can

All I know is that most of the spam that appears on here comes from Dallas or Altlanta - if I block or delete the account another one appears. Back in the good old days when everyone had a unique IP number it was easy to block, now so many have floating IP's, I could block the main part of the IP, but it would affect far too many people on here. So it is easier, for the moment, to delete the annoying posts
