Hi,
Someone said to me today that this years Ten Tors expedition will be the last one ever. It is the first I have heard of this, does anyone know if it is true?
John.

Don't think so - check out the official Ten Tors site - which now states:-
Ten Tors 2013
If you want to take part in Ten Tors 2013, first check the Event Rules and Conditions, then register your group's interest with the Event Organisers by July 2012. The selection committee meets in September and will advise applicants during that month... See "How can I get into a Ten Tors team?" in the FAQ for more information.

Can't see them stopping the Ten Tors now. Not when you have the grandchildren of the original competitors getting ready for this years event. The event itself has too much momentum and prestige in the area? God forbid that we take this challenge away from our kids? (wish I had done it
:( )
Here is a thought for you. Could you imagine if the Ten Tors didn't exist and YOU wanted to get it off the ground NOW! In this day of "risk assessment political correctness" etc. etc................ NO CHANCE!
Once it's gone it's gone? What would life be like WITHOUT risk?
Dull as ditch water?
LONG LIVE THE TEN TORS. LONG LIVE THE ISLE OF MAN T.T. LONG LIVE A LIFE WITH "RISK"?
FIGHT the IDIOTS with the clipboards. The beard wearing, woolly jumper clad, real ale drinking, BUFFOONS? Long live ENGLAND long live RISK?

Totally agree - it is the culture these days - have an accident and sue, sue, sue. It was a tragedy what happened to Charlotte, but accidents happen all the time. Its one of those cases of - if only!!! I've been on the moors trying to cross rivers that are not in spate and its difficult enough. Your legs get swept from under you and the shock sets in and you can't think what to do to right yourself. But to stop all the other thousands of youngsters doing this challenge is unbelievable. When there is a death on the roads, everyone else isn't stopped from driving!. Sadly I get the feeling the PC brigade will bring in so many extra 'safety measures' that it won't be a 'challenge' anymore. Like bridges everywhere to get across rivers, bulldozing the tors to stop them 'climbing', umbrellas at specific points if it rains, your own personal butler to carry your rucksack .................. shame if it changes in any way. My special needs son has his bronze (10miles), silver (11miles)and gold(15miles) badges. I'm still a very proud mother that he did it, even though I was a nervous wreck when he was out there in the wilds doing the challenge.

I do not understand why they want to stop it - perhaps it might be the lack of manpower to police the event, the event is dangerous and tht is why they practice for week after week to get experience.
Of course there is danger and these things are good for the character for the individual. If fatalities happen I think it is unfortunate and a pity, but it shouldn't stop the event from happening.
I also think kids today are wrapped in too much cotton wool. They are prisoners folr most of their childhood these days, kept indoors or sent to schools with a steel barricade wrapped around it.
What I am going to say next might upset a few people - people die and children are people. A moment of stupidity is usually the cause.
The ten tors is meant to push youngsters to the limit, limits they have no idea they can reach, but those limits are reachable.
Fatalities will make the others in the team stronger over the years, though at the time no one will think so.
Something I always tell anyone going onto the moors - it is a dangerous place and to be careful and respect the power of nature
As for real ale drinkers... I am one!
