Oh dear, which 'letterboxing book' did you buy???
If you trawl through the threads on here you will get all the advice you need to start this exciting hobby and be more successful fginding the boxes. Best get yopurselves to the tors whic h are very children friendly, like Pew tor and Feather tor, or around the Staple tors. All close to the road to start off from with lots of boxes hiding under the rocks. You could also send off for one of the charity walks - see Charity walk thread - which will almost guarantee you at least a dozen boxes. Of course you have to have 'the kit' - compass, map letterbox stamping gear etc...
Enjoy, then the more boxes you collect the children will become addicted - or not - and off you go.

So much for having to get 100 boxes before you could buy the official book then and join the 100 club!!!

I didnt know I had to get 100 before getting a book maybe we should put the book on the side and go hunting without it :D we may have more luck because its been years since I have used a compass lol

I would recommend Bone hill rocks and Saddle tor if you are scouting for boxes with kids. We were at Pew tor in the week and found a geocache and about 5 or 6 boxes but without stamps unfortunately.
Hound tor is another good kids one, always some there and if the worst comes to the worst ask at the Hound of the Basket meals for their stamps!!
I was told (on here) that getting a hundred before you get the book had been scrapped.
We're rubbish with a compass too and do it with the kids, they now love Dartmoor and are always exhausted by it!! It is a great hobby to get you and the kids out and about!!

I think that "rule" was rightly dumped many many years ago.

With regard to the 100 boxes for the 100 club and catalogue, I emailed Stephanie Paul to get a ruling on this. And yes Gemma you are right. Sylvia can sell the catalogue to whoever she wishes whether they are letterboxers or not. No wonder the LBT is so active if he/she can just go and buy the book.

It would be a shame not to use the book now that you have paid for it Heidi. However, it is a real test to find your first 100 without it. Just look at the walk planner at the back to find the best places. I reckon that far less than half of all boxes on the moor are in the book anyway. So it really wouldn't take that long. But hey, you have the clues now :)
I guessed this lapse in the rules had taken place.
The last two Meets I have been to, I was able to purchase a book without being asked a single thing.
I liked the idea of finding your first 100 without clues, it seemed more romantic somehow

Blimey, this forum is a grumpy and elitest place sometimes! As Gemma said, this requirement was dumped years and years ago, no point grumbling about it even if you don't agree and it's downright rude, imo, to do so in a thread where somebody is excited about a new hobby!
She's done nothing wrong, and you shouldn't make her feel like she has.
Welcome to "boxing", Heidi! :)

Scenario. LBT finds 100 boxes which by all accounts they/he/she has way passed this total. Applies for the catalogue under an assumed name. Member of the 100 club can now buy the catalogue.......
Still LBT.!!
As far as I know the catalogue has been available to anyone certainly for the past 25 years...
Not sure what point you are making.

The thing with the 100 club and the catalogue, especially when I started, you had to get 100 boxes to prove you were genuinely interested in boxing.
This practice was dropped about 10 years ago, which I thought was a shame at the time, but didn't really bother me too much.
However, some of us like to try to keep to the traditional methods, but you don't have to!
As for this forum... I certainly hope it isn't a home for the elitists out there.
I like to think it is more of a family where can all have our say without fear of too much reprisal.
As an administrator, I have the hard task of filtering new members, some of whom can be seriously undesirable and don't get through, one or two can and do get through. However, the same can be said of genuine boxers, most of whom do get through but I can make the odd mistake and delete the application which is genuine application. It happens!

Thanks for the helpful advice in this thread :) I too am a mum of 2 boys and myself and hubby want to get back to letterboxing as it really gets us out & about and the moors are so beautiful! We only really 'dabbled' when the boys were little and they got tired easily! We now have our stamp and books to the ready...now to find some boxes! :D
