Sorry if this seems like a daft question. But I've looked at the OS map and I just want to be absolutely sure and not get shot! Am I allowed on any day of the week to walk from rundlestone to great mis tor? As long as I go no further north from great mis tor it looks as though this is ok. Just need reassurance that's all! I believe there is a flag on the Tor but it's ok to walk right up to the flag?? I'm fairly new to this. Thanks in advance.

Hi, yes you can walk up to the tor even when the red flag is flying. What you MUST NOT DO is walk INSIDE or past the red and white range poles. If the red flag is flying be very aware of troops actually on the tor and around the hut there. If you type into Google Dartmoor Firing times you can get a list of when the red flags will be flying and you need to view the Merrivale Range times.

Thank you. That's what I thought. Just needed verification.
Don't go walking up to Yes Tor when there's a flag flying, though! (that's well inside the range boundary)

Most tor on the Okehampton Firing range with flags on are in the range and definately a no go area. If you park in the large car park at the top of the hill near Row tor, the range poles go straight across in front of you. Just remember - Never walk through the line of range poles, even if you can see no one about when those red flags are flying. Red spells Danger and if you check the firing times, it will say LIVE FIRING. Cross through them at your peril!!!
I was once letterboxing up on Cut Hill which is split between merivale range anf the Okehampton range. There was no firing on the Oke range, but Merrivale was. There were one or two boxes we needed to get which were just inside the Merrivale range poles and as there was no one about we ducked down into a gully to get the box only about 50 yards away. We stamped up and high tailed it back only to find a Range warder on his horse staring down at us. He said he had been watching us from over near Rough tor!!!! Never tried that again :(

Sounds scary! I went up there this week. Weird thing is I found some used rounds near little mis Tor ?? Outside the firing range??
It's well outside the range so they've probably been dumped. If I had a penny for every cartridge I've found on the moor.......

There is still a bit of ordinance outside of the range poles left after the troop training back in WWII - every now and then something is found. Unfortunately a young girl found a mortar shell, about 8 years ago, which went bang and injured her.
If you find anything call The Commandant Dartmoor Training Area, Okehampton Camp, Okehampton EX20 1QP, 01837 657 210 giving as mush information as possible.
