Which Pub Would You Recommend For Lunch On Dartmoor?

With a couple of friends we are on an occasional basis starting to work our way through Dartmoor's pubs for lunchtime snacks / meals. So far we have visited The Cleave, Lustleigh and today the Rugglestone Inn, Widecombe In The Moor. Both were busy with excellent food and service.

Does anyone have any recommendations as to where we could try next?

Well David I am looking at you in a different light now - going on pub crawls ummmmmmmmm. If I see wavy edges on your stamps now I will know why!!!!

I took my parents to the Kestor Inn in Water about 18 months ago. I can definitely recommend the steak baguette and my old man reckoned that the local butcher's faggots were superb. Nice stamp behind the bar as well.

Forget the name, but the pub in North Bovey was pretty good last time I visited. And I would particularly recommend the Oxenham Arms in South Zeal which is both customer and dog friendly, does good food, has a great atmosphere and is the only pub I've visited with a putting green and two menhirs (these last indoors!).

The pub in North Bovey is the Ring of Bells. I went there about four years ago for a meal after a golf do at Bovey Castle. Good food and a lovely pub.

Thanks for the Pub name - always remember where they are but hopeless on names! Over the years we've been working through a lot of them; as well as the couple mentioned above I would also recommend the Dartmoor Inn at Lydford (on the main !386), both of the main pubs in Chagford - one I think Ring O' Bells and the Bridford Inn. Have been to Fingle Bridge many times for the river walks, but always find the pub too crowded and food a bit ordinary. At the other extreme The Rock at Haytor was a bit too fancy for us fresh off the Moor! And does anyone know what's become of the Forest Inn at Hexworthy?

The Forest Inn has been closed since February 2014 and is currently for sale.

It is your for sum of £1, but will cost you a little bit more after purchase. Have a look at:

So tempted!! is it time for a career change?.

Can afford the asking price, may come up short on the renovation costs though!

Gosh, interesting! Would have to sell an awful lot of beer to pay the leasehold rent though...

due you think they would let me view it so i can have a hunt to see if there is a letterbox behind the bar (if there ever was one?).!

Which is possibly why it closed.

Yes, probably is why it closed. Last time I had lunch there, there were more staff than customers. Can't help thinking though that somewhere of that size and in such a wonderful position could be turned around. Hope some enterprising soul is looking hard at those details!

It is a great pity when you consider it's history. It is one of those places on Dartmoor that most people have heard of.

I didn't know that 'the meet' used to held at The Forest Inn before moving to Princetown. If anyone is interested, The Legendary Dartmoor site provides a potted history and photographs of the place.

It was a nice pub... but empty... it got too expensive in my opinion
