Recently a member of this excellent web site asked me if it was possible to arrange a map and compass reading forum.
I feel that this is a great idea especially for the newer members that needs this info to improve their letterboxing skills. The more experienced members can advise with situations as mist interfering with the compass, how to walk on a fog line back to the car when visability gets bad. Different types of compasses, map reading skills and so on.
So what do you all think? Vote on the poll and leave a message on this thread. Webmaster, Administator and Moderators please leave your feedback.
Hope everyone is ok,
Paul

I whole heartedly agree with you - it never hurts to refresh ones map reading skills
Especially when wandering around in the fog, though my worst experience was a total white out up by Princetown when me, the (ex)missus, and the kids were almost lost with swirling snow and no viz, only the sound of the cattle grid guided us back to the warmth!
Though I love walking on the moor, especially in the fog, as it gives it surreal aspect to the moor.

I think it's a great idea!
I know our map compass skills arn't what they should be.

Wonderful idea - being relative newbies we are only just progressing to using a compass, and while I understand the theory it all goes a bit pete tong when it comes to the practical test!
Cue my other half rolling his eyes and groans of "Muuuuum" from the offsprings when I say in a bright breezy tone
"Oh no, it's actually back the way we've just walked" for the fourth time in twenty minutes.
So PLEASE help me!! The harmony of family life is at stake!!

"Oh no, it's actually back the way we've just walked" for the fourth time in twenty minutes.
I know what you mean, hey, even us more experience letterboxers still do that! Mind you I always put it down to bad bearings. :D

One of my favourite errors I have heard with compass errors is someone taking a bearing from one of those range poles - not realising that the pole is made of steel and attracts the needle therefore giving a false bearing.
But have many times had to rely upon my compass to get me from A to B before I got my GPS which I have had now for almost 10 years - a real antique now, though, though I seldom use it for boxing as it destroys the fun of looking for the box

I remember spending over half an hour looking for a particular box using my Sylva Sighting Compass, only to realise that my metal framed glasses were interfering with the compass! Arhhh! The frames affected the bearings by two degrees!
The things we are talking about on this thread prove the need for a Compass & Map Reading Forum.

I'll let this thread develop and go from there - because I really dont want to swamp the site with various forums - maybe make a thread in the notices and links section as that is what it meant for.
In fact I think I will go and start it now....
