Saturated books on Leedon Tor

#1 Post by Mooncat » Sun Jun 14, 2009 7:22 pm

Hi,

I finally went out letteboxing for the first time today, after months of saying I would, and ventured up to Leedon Tor.

Unfortunately the first 2 boxes we found contained extrememly wet contents, the books were soggy and unreadable and the stamps were very wet. I managed to dry the first stamp enough to get a print, and when I replaced it, I put it in a bag inside the box to try and keep it dry. The first stamp was a small circular toucan, and the second, which was a cartoon zebra was made from a more plastic like material and hadn't absorbed the water. It would seem they belong to the same person as the books and boxes were the same, although no name and address were visible in the box or books.

As these were the first 2 boxes we had ever found, I was unsure what to do with them, I have done what I can to keep them dry, but I left the books in the boxes, should I have taken them out?

Rachel :)

If you can identify the boxes then report them to the 100 club - if not - well to remove the boxes is upto you.
The call is difficult even for some of the more established boxers around because you could end up with heap of rubbish in your rucksack.
Replacing books bags or boxes is more the common route most people take though you could end up spending a fortune maintaining other peoples boxes.

The best way I find to do it is to make a note of where you found the box and go to the Plymouth Get together and talk to them - they are a bunch of very experienced boxers who can give you plenty of advice

Hi Nik.

Until September my Wednesday evenings are booked, so popping along to the meetings at woodland fort is out of the question for now. I think I will add a few spare notebooks to the contents of my rucksack for the time being, and only remove the box if it can not be salvaged, as a last resort.

Thanks for the advice, as newbies it is very welcome :D
