Re: Newbie
Hi Tracy, Unfortunately this site rarely gets visitors now - I keep it going mostly for the historical messages - so there's been no replies. There is a nice article here; https://www.dartmoorletterboxing.org/viewtopic.php?t=1501 And there's a very small community on Facebook covering letterboxing, ...

Looking forwards to a new year
2022's been another odd year, and I personally find it reassuring that Dartmoor largely succeeds in continuing unchanged and provides a reassuring constancy. Of course there are changes - climate change seems likely to alter the landscape as it has been altered before. Dartmoor Bylaw changes threate...

Re: Back to letterboxing
Sounds great, thanks for the history. Plotting the locations is half the fun for me, and I also try to be efficient by grouping them together with others, plus some geocaches too. Not been out too much lately though, but hoping to do more soon.

2022 and the forum is back!
(After announcing this, a significant bug surfaced that prevented people registering or logging on, so I've reverted to a different form of hosting and this now seems to be working)
April 2022 - This forum is now back and hosted on Dartmoor.

Re: The future of this forum
That's a fair point, Rich - although it was already in decline when I took it over 4 or 5 years ago. Forums tend to need a critical mass of active users and I don't think that will ever return here.
I'm going to try to find someone to take it over though, so hopefully it won't disappear completely.

The future of this forum
It's now been a few months since there was any activity on this site, so I'm writing this partly to test whether things are still working - but also to see if there is much interest in this forum continuing.

Re: Is there a procol for removing decaying boxes?
Geocaches will be on the geocaching map if they're active - I'm happy to check any grid reference or coordinates if anyone's in doubt if there's one there. They're also rarely closer than 0.1miles apart. They should also be marked as 'Geocache' or have a card inside, and will always have a logbook o...

Thanks for confirming that. Not entirely unexpected and certainly the right thing to do.

Re: Returning to the moor
Hi Frog, Welcome back to the fold. I don't do much letterboxing myself, although I do geocache quite a lot. Hopefully someone else will be along to add their view, but here's my answers to your little quiz; 1) Where are the areas we can't site boxes, it was Birch Tor in my day but I've seen mention ...

Re: Suggest an outing
Hi Thomas, I can answer a couple of bits about the access - hopefully someone else can fill in some info about box densities. The Okehampton military roads were partly closed a fair few years ago. They're still a good setting off point for Cranmere Pool, but you can only go about a mile on from the ...

Registration issues - solved
A user made me aware of some issues that resulted in this error message during registration; "Field 'user_website' doesn't have a default value [1364]" I've given the database a good talking to and registrations are now active again. Apologies for this, not sure what happened - possibly an...

Re: Some Missing Boxes
There is a geocache on Hollow Tor - placed by famous letterboxer Red Roaming. https://coord.info/GC19Q6Z
It's a traditional so won't contain a stamp. Caches do often contain trinkets for kids, but don't need to.
