missing & damaged boxes

Hello all, In posting a comment I am always that (we) are on the edge of the activity (walkers more than boxers) and certainly lacking in the experience held by many who read and post on the site. I just wonder if any/all of the following apply; 1. We often find a number of boxes that seem water sod...

Bellever; wet/damaged box

Hello all, We hope that you are having the opportunity to enjoy the good weather - and getting in some productive letterboxing and walking. On our walk yesterday we discovered a very wet (sadly ruined, book) in a small box (grey pharmacy tub) cited on the side of the hill at Bellever tor (heading do...

Taw valley

This is what makes letter boxing so fascinating! We 'did' the Taw Marsh area a couple of weeks ago and convinced outselves that we must have walked past many boxes (none found). We avoided any ruins 'man made' etc, but did have a good 'root around' some rocks and isolated trees under the shadow of S...

New Box

What a grand idea - nice and thoughtful. We have also added a little note in our box (Laughter Tor) to the effect that it is a letterbox and not a geocache site. We welcome geocachers to sign the book - but do advise them that the box contents (stamp, book, inkpad and pencils) are not trinkets, so p...

Rain ?

Dartmoor being in its own climate perhaps ? Misty when I left Somerset this morning (the type that promises sunshine when it lifts ) :D and we also spent the day up above Harford with plenty of breeze and dark foreboding clouds threatening from the North - luckily it stayed dry ! Ironically it was s...

Grey pots

Good observation! Yes, we noticed that quite a lot of letterboxes consisted of these (grey pots) and concluded that the letterboxing world must have had more than a couple of pharmacists among its membership :) . We have used a 'snap lid' plastic sandwich box hinged on each of sides (bought at any s...

Monday ...

... ah well, looking out of the window you may not be so lucky with the weather today :( We ventured up yesterday and ,given how 'breezy' it was decided to avoid the high centre of the moor. There weren't that many walkers out but we did meet some fellow hardy souls who like us, has decided to brave ...

Site activity.

Hello TT, I think that this is a pattern that happens on many forums. I first joined last year, and had many questions to ask - consequently I posted quite a lot at the time. Having gained that knowledge I then went about walking/boxing until another query (or responding to another post) seemed appr...

GPS

Hello Colin, Having been raised as a map and compass man, I decided to join the modern world last year and bought myself the Garmin etrex (basic of basic models). To me the pleasure is still in the map and compass. The GPS provides some 'interesting' data - but to be honest I could do without it. It...

Ten Commandments stone

We did a very nice walk recently in this area. Started at Hemsworthy Gate (742/761) then up to Pill Tor, Tunhill Rocks and down to Blackslade ford. Up to Cold East Cross before crossing to the 'stone'. The return route took in Rippon Tor before dropping down to Hemsworthy. The area is 'littered' wit...

Finding boxes

Hello Heatherwalkers, I have 'pasted part of a reply I recently sent to another new boxer below; I don't know if our strategy would help; but we tend to plan a walk that happens to include a search for boxes at various points, rather than to just arrive at a venue in the hope of finding. I recently ...

Finding boxes.

Hello Kat, What a pity your first venture was a disappointment - you did however find 7! As you can see from the posts, one of the difficulties is knowiing which areas have a concentration of boxes as this seems to be quite a transient affair. Delights at finding - and disappointments at not doing s...

ghosts and creaky floors....

Hello Tina,

The ghost might explain some of the creaky floors! I stayed there coincidentally on Valentines night (alone sadly!) and there were many unusual noises throughout the building - some of which I will leave to the imagination,

Hotels.

I had a very pleasant stay in the area over the spring/summer (2010). This was at the Bedford Hotel at Tavistock. Yes, you would probably pay less at a B&B but I found it on 'late rooms' at a good rate. Somewhat gothic looking from the outside, it had lots of old world charm and good service on ...

When things go missing from boxes ...

Hello all, From readng the posts, it seems that items go missing from boxes for a number of reasons. These range from outright vandalism/theft, not being put back correctly, perhaps taken by the boxer themselves, or geocachers who may mistake box contents as 'trinkets' to be taken away. To try to re...
