No offense to anybody intended here, but I've heard quite enough of how bad stealing letterboxes is. What I've yet to hear is a structured plan to address the matter and without such a plan we're lost. Yellowmead locals? That implies they were organised, which means there'd be an organisation we can...

Hi Howard,

Like you I try not to be intrusive - quick hello is normally all I do.

Obviously we're all different, with different ways of doing the same things. All I'm trying to avoid is a scenario where we all eye up every person we meet on the moor as a suspect, instead as a potential friend.

Well done to the letterbox thief! Not only is he/she (they?) stealing boxes, but also creating an atmosphere of mistrust that in the long run will be far more damaging than a few boxes being stolen every so often. In military terms this has been a huge battle victory for the thief! In another post I...

Hi Nik, I've travelled quite a bit in Africa and I've seen some amazing things, from the mighty Zambezi to where the Okovango Delta disappears and the landscape changes from marsh to dry desert in the space of a football pitch, to Xai Xai where the beach sand makes sparks underfoot when you run on i...

When I was a lad in South Africa, my dad gave me my 1st compass. It dated from just after WWII and was in perfect working order (nearly 40 years old when I got it!). I used that often for many years and it was as accurate as any other compass I've come across. Of course, it was heavy enough to see m...

Is there a record of who bought the walk? If so, it'd narrow down the list of suspects massively to those that bought it before Nik found NR 5 missing.

Not trying to be difficult here, but there are a number of differences. Yes, Memory-Map is a GPS utility, but it's also a fully fledged GPS navigation package capable of running on Windows PC's and on Windows Mobile devices. GPS Utility is a specific piece of software that allows users of Garmin, Ma...

A late reply, I know, but the variance is created because a compass points to magnetic north and not to the north pole. The problem is magnetic north is not static at all, but instead "wanders" about. To compound matters, the earth's magnetic field doesn't run straight north-south, either....

Wires, I think they're talking about GPS devices such as Magellan, etc. while you obviously use a Windows Mobile device, such as a PDA or Smartphone.

I use Memory Map, too and what a brilliant application it is!

Perhaps technology can provide an answer here: wouldn't take too much to set up a battery-powered motion-sensitive camera, just camouflage it well else the thief would have that, too! I'd suggest a fake-rock shell made out of resin or similar. Combined with regular inspections that'd help reveal who...

Thanks for the welcome! I also read that bit about the 500 stamps, but surely that's cheating? Despite the enjoyment of scavenging, I really want my kids to remain excited, hence me looking for clues. The idea is that I'll do the clue part and then steer them into targeted areas, whereafter it's up ...

I'll be there at 10-ish - looking forward to my 1st meet! I'll be the guy with three children in tow and a funny accent! Afterwards, depending on the weather, my kids and I will head out to the moor, probably in the region of Childe's Tomb (never visited it before) unless I get better suggestions on...
