NEW MEMBERS

Post by Nik - KOTM »

***Edited again slightly to take into account the changes I have made***

I didn't want to do this, but, due to the increasing numbers of spammers hitting this site, I have taken it upon myself, and Sowerby Streaker for the time being to "vet" all new membership applications. So apologies to all new members who will have to wait a few hours to join.

Anybody wishing to join it would help the administration if you put in your location and your interests as we would like members who are genuinely interested in Dartmoor and/or letterboxing, and preferably wanting to contribute to the discussions if only to say hello :)

Also if you are going to present a name as a random mixed set of numbers and letters it won't be favourable in your cause to be a member.

Although it is going to be draconian and a PITA for us, until further notice EVERYONE who joins will have to be cleared through us, if you have friends out there in tinternetland who want to join, ask them to be patient. We will access all applications as required. Anyone requesting a website link will be looked into and if deemed to be "selling" inappropriate rubbish will be deleted.

I know this sounds a little heavy handed and dictatorial but the increasing amount of spam that is hitting our site needs to be nipped in the bud now.
We have a good site here and I, for one, want to keep it that way.
To date the moderators have done a fantastic job in being vigilant and keeping the spam away, but they can only do so much.

There are a few of these accounts on the memberlist that are still "active", and for the time being will be either pruned out or left until they start spamming.

These changes should not affect current members... if they do please contact me on [email protected]

All questions can either be thrown at me or Sowerby Streaker, as we now both have admin status, I had to do this otherwise things could have gone badly wrong if something happened to me.

I am hoping the spam thing has now been resolved

Very Good call, but from my experience of Forum admin, it will not have much effect on the amount of spam we get. Hope I have got that wrong though. Good Luck.

I don't think its heavy handed at all. Its just responsible action, and for the good of the whole forum.

At the moment I am deleting about 5 new application accounts a day, which is on the increase from 2 or 3.
However, if any new person feels they have been unfairly dismissed from the application process to contact me on my email address (which has recently been cleaned up) and I will look into it.

But as I said, the more info that can be given on the application the better chance you will have of getting past the filtration process
