Although I do carry a lot with me it really doesn't take much space up at all. Up to now, and apart from food and drink, I've only needed the gel plasters but you just never know when it might come in handy.

Mobile phone, water tablets and empty water bottle, and a compass, this is when I am just walking. And two dogs just incase I need to keep warm.
But when I am out walking someone always knows my exact where abouts every hour.

But when I am letterboxing, then I take a lot more.

well i can not think of anything else i put in it, as the boot of the car holds all the rest like spare clothes and shoes and more water to have a hot brew at the end of the day.....roll on summer

Tricky one this. Folks will carry how much kit feels right for them which for me is next to nothing. Occasionally literally nothing. That said though, on winter night runs when I'm on my own, its:

Map
Compass
Whistle

I wear my head torch and windshirt if it's absolutely Baltic. Oh, and a dog lead for Spook.

It sounds like some of you camp out with all the gear you take out.
When I walked from Okehampton camp to Princetown in summer 2000 I took nothing except the cloths on my back, but I did have a fresh water drink half way near Cut hill.

A lot of what I take depends upon where I am going... if I know I am going to be out overnight then I will take the lot! But if I am only going upto a mile off road and for the day I will seriously cut back on what I have to carry... Time of year is a major factor as well.
It is funny but when you read someones list, in fact almost anyones list, they never mention the minor detail of a couple of plastic bags to keep your stuff dry inside your rucksack and to keep your waterproofs at the top of your bag.
But then I am nit picking.... I usually go out with GPS, compass, map and letterbox gear... getting soaked isn't a major worry as I have been soaked on many occasions...
