List of boxes 1 to 100?

Post by John »

Hello,

I feel that this may have been asked before, albeit a long time ago, but does anyone have a list of the letterboxes from 1 to 100 or some part of it?

I imagine quite a few of them are no longer maintained at all, and no doubt gone, but I was thinking it might be nice (?) to try and get round to as many as I could. I have already visited some such as Cranmere and Duck's Pool, but a trek out to Lints Tor (for example) would be a good walk.

Thanks.

No1 is Watern Tor.
Cranmere pool is no12
and Ducks Pool is No 35.
If you wish I can E-mail a copy to you.

List 1 - 100

Post by trekkernod »

Hi,
I have a list from No.1 to the latest box. I do have a couple of empty numbers and some numbers that were never used and numbers for boxes that were numbered twice.

I'm curious as to how you obtained such a list? And why some numbers were not used. Ironically I was thinking the other day that in as much as telephone directories can be sorted numerically (so I gather), so I assume it may be possible to produce a numerically sorted catalogue.

letterbox numerical list

Post by trekkernod »

To answer the question of how I obtained a 'Master List'.
A letterboxer was compiling a computerised list of all catalogued letterboxes that had been put on the moor, and matching them with a image of the stamp. The result was to be a database of letterboxes, their clues and an image of the stamp(s).
I've not seen the gent at the Meet for a while now, so have no idea if the project was ever completed. It was some task he set for himself. It would be nice to know if he is OK.
The gent in question asked other letterboxes for information and I supplied him with some, and asked for a list of all the catalogued letterboxes. I then used this list to update my records.

I cuurently own seven really old boxes:

Watern Oke
Combeshead Potato Cave
Oke Tor
Crow Tor (No.23 ?)
Avon Head
Yealm Head (No.15)
Belstone Tor (No.28 ?)

Could anyone help me with the numbers of these boxes? They were put out by RP Milton many years ago. I believe they are all part of the original 100 or so boxes. I wish to resite them this year with a bit of luck.

Box number 28 - 'Belstone' - is still listed in the catalogue.

Good for you on reinstating some of these old boxes though :)

I have noticed that too, John
I am wondering if Belstone and Belstone Tor are two different boxes

Unused numbers duplicates

Post by trekkernod »

John,
The only reasons I can think of as to why Catalogue Numbers were not uses, or numbered twice are:
People asked for specific numbers and then failed to use them.
Boxes were given numbers and the clue never issued or box never sited
Boxes numbered twice in error.

Probably just human error.

The box No.28 is Belstone (Tor)
