Post by Devon Dumplings »

came across this site and thought it might be useful to anyone who needs to brush up on their navigatin skills. Like me. :)

If anyone has done anything like this - is it worth it or is it best to just get out there and try to work it out for yourself?

I also came across this site to the other day. It a good idea but not one that I would like to do really. I suppose if someone is a complete novice to the moors and need to learn how to use a GPS or compass then yeh, not a bad idea.
Bearing in mind ,excuse the pun, this course is not solely for letterboxing but moor on how to navigate. To me these things can be learn't from an experienced friend or fellow letterboxer, at least this way you become much more familiar with the moors, especially when you venture off that beaten track where organised walks do not go.

Just my humble opinion,

Paul

Thanks, as I looked through the site I had the same thoughts, but it's good to hear from someone with experience of these things. :)

I can thoroughly recommend compassworks. I have attended about 3 of their courses now, and will be doing an NNAS assessment next week. They do NOT follow the beaten track of organised walks. Dave Hawkins who is now running compassworks is excellent at instruction and certainly knows his stuff. I have walked on the moors for over 20 years now, but Dave still taught me things I never knew about the map and compass! :)
